Eyelid Correction
Eye lid correction, medical surgical procedure known as blepharoplasty, involves removal of fat pads located below skin muscles, and may be located in both upper and lower eye lids. The procedure also includes the removal of extra skin.
The operation is aimed at correction of loose upper lids, as well as bags in the area of lower lids, which make the patient look older and tired. Sometimes the upper lid skin may be so abundant that it may cause reduction of visual field as well as headaches that result from effort to keep the lids open.
At the first examination your wishes and aims will be taken into consideration; everything will be written down. Then, detailed examinations will be performed and the plan of the operation that fully corresponds to your needs will be created. Preoperative photos are used so that the procedure and the final result will be fully followed and step-by-step explained to the patient. During the examination the patient is informed about possible risk and limitation. Our aim is to give all the information to the patient so that s/he would have a clear picture of what to expect.
Blepharoplasty may be performed in local anesthesia and a patient is awake and cooperates with the surgeon, but during the operation s/he is relaxed and does not feel any pain. The operation takes 1.30 to 3 hours in relation to whether two or all four eyelids are operated on. If there is no extra skin on lower lids but there is apparent fatty pad, it is possible to remove or relocate the fatty pad transconjunctivally without cutting the skin. In that case, the operation is performed in general anesthesia and preparation at our hospital must be done before the operation.
If classic blepharoplasty is performed, the scars on upper lids are hidden in natural skin folds and on lower lids scars are located 2mm below the lashes. Incisions are closed by thin anti-traumatic suture that is removed 5-7 days upon the intervention. During the immediate postoperative recovery, the patient has purple bruises on eyelids and is advised to apply cold compress for several days. In case of pain, analgesics are used as agreed with the surgeon. Patients are advised to sleep with head in a higher position than usual. Contact lenses must not be worn for two weeks after the operation.
Upon removal of stitches patients may wear light corrective make-up and get back to their daily activities.
