Correction of ears – otoplasty

This intervention is usually aimed at getting prominent (lap ears) closer to the head or at reduction of big ears. It is performed mostly in children between the age of 4 and 14 but it is performed in older patients, as well.

The intervention should be chosen only when a child (patient) with such ears starts to feel uncomfortable, because they cooperate better in that case and are more motivated. So, you never choose the intervention if your child is not interested!

Operation is performed in local anesthesia more frequently but, if agreed with a surgeon, the operation may be performed in general anesthesia especially if the child is very young. The intervention lasts for two hours and after it, patients are ready to go home, unless they are operated on in general anesthesia. Immediately after the intervention elastic bandage is placed; this is eased upon several days and completely removed upon 7 days. The first several days are painful, and the pain is relieved by analgesics.

Older patients may resume work after five days, and children should be taken care of for longer, especially when they play with other children.

Surgical suture is removed after two weeks.
